Announcing a remarkable new series of three streamed dissection workshops with master therapist and fascial expert, Julian Baker. Having refined the process of both dissection and live streaming, Julian is this year returning to the lab with more incredible dissection content, bringing detail to specific areas of the body.

As well as the layers of anatomy, Julian will be looking at functional movement, connection and studying the fascia, muscle and bone of the tissues concerned. The donor specimens are preserved in a way that gives full mobility and the movement of tissue will be a significant feature of these classes.

Each workshop will run over three days, and will dedicate approximately nine hours to each area being covered. The sessions will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the structures of the human body as each layer is reflected and studied. You will be able to ask questions directly through the live sessions as well as during the Q&A sessions at the end.

The recordings of sessions will be available immediately and you then have LIFETIME access to them, enabling you to revisit and revise each area as often as you wish or when clients arrive with specific issues.

At each stage, using several camera angles you will be to see not just the anatomy of each region, but the spaces between fascia, muscle and bone and how they all connect. This isn’t just about layers being peeled away, but about how tissues and fibres penetrate and attach to each other in a functional way.

Julian has been a manual therapist and teacher for three decades hosting highly acclaimed dissection classes for over 15 years. His goal is to present anatomy in a way that reflects the needs of manual and movement therapists, rather than from an academic perspective.

A passionate and skilled presenter, his humours and approachable teaching style makes his content incredibly easy to engage with and is aimed at transforming your practice and giving you, the therapist greater understanding of the human body, boosting your confidence in your every day work.

Julian understands the pressures that self employed therapists face and is committed to keeping the price of this knowledge as low as possible, allowing more people to gain access to this vital information.

To that end these workshops, giving you lifetime access are priced at the remarkably low cost of just £75 each or all three workshops for £175.

All Workshops broadcast 7 -9.30pm (BST) + Q&A

Workshop One

The Shoulder and Lateral Neck

10th - 12th July

(All workshops are recorded for you to keep!)

Dissecting the skin, superficial fascia, movement of neck and head in relation to the shoulder, we will be aiming to examine how the tissues of the neck and shoulder blend with each other to create function and balance through the upper body. We will see the degree to which fascial tissues appear less dense in areas where more movement is required and how stabilisation occurs in mobile joints.

Starting with the skin and superficial tissues, we will address the tissues from the under side of the mandible, all the way across the lateral neck and into the shoulder.

The anterior and posterior shoulder area will be thoroughly examined and constantly moved and mobilised at each stage, showing how structures relate to each other as well as how they

change during the dissection process.

Areas to be covered

  • Skin and superficial fascia of the neck and shoulder.

  • Muscles of the posterior shoulder, neck and and scapula: trapezius, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, rhomboid major and minor, levator scapula, posterior deltoid

  • Examination and mobilisation of the shoulder and lateral neck

  • Anterior shoulder: Deltoid, Pectoralis Major,Joints and ligaments of the humerus, scapula and clavicle,Examining and discussing conjoined movements of bone, muscle and ligament in functional movement

  • Nerves of the shoulder and superficial neck

  • Blood vessels supplying the shoulder

  • Lymphatic drainage in the shoulder area.

Workshop Two

The Knee and Hamstring

17th - 19th July

(All workshops are recorded for you to keep!)

The leg is encased in a strong bag of fascia, the fibres of which blend into the underside of the skin, through the fatty tissue.

We will look at how these fibres attach and the role of superficial fascia and deep in the stabilisation of the lower limb.

The iliotibial band is an integral part of the leg fascia and we will discuss how this particular tissue is defined and sculpted and examine ways in which is should be considered, treated and referred to differently, especially in relation to injury or knee pain.

Working from the ischial tuberosity down to below the knee, we will look at how the hamstrings attach all the way along the leg and create the stability of the knee and beyond.

We will look at the knee from the front, back and through the ligaments on the medial and lateral side, as well as of course the important cruciate ligament.

We will mobilise the knee and hamstrings regularly throughout the sessions, enabling you to see how the tissues move and interact with each other and will show how structures join to each other to create strong interactions.

Areas to be covered

  • The ITB and its relationship to the hamstring and knee

  • Posterior compartment of the upper leg and the fascial bag surrounding the muscles.

  • Popliteal fossa and structures on either side of the knee

  • Muscles of the lower limb and how they overlap to attach to the femur.

  • Fascial continuities of upper to lower limb and implications for injury, pain and treatment

  • The knee joint

  • Lateral, medial and cruciate ligaments of the knee

  • Lateral knee pain and lower limb fascia

  • Pes anserinus as a major factor in knee function and pain and new approaches to understanding it

Workshop Three

The Abdominals and Lateral Pelvis/Hip

24th - 26th July

(All workshops are recorded for you to keep!)

The ‘layers’ of the abdomen are difficult to visualise, often resulting in misinterpretation of how they are arranged and organised in the body.

In this workshop we will look at the continuities of the abdomen and how they blend with tissues from the middle and lower back, the hips and the pelvis.

This is an area where we often see an accumulation of fatty tissue and we will look at how collagen fibres are arranged in this area and the different way in which they blend and attach to the bony areas of the pelvis.

We will examine the manner in which all the fibres of the abdominal layers blend into the centre of the body and show how the anterior rectus sheath acts as an anchor and stabilising structure between upper and lower areas of the body.

We will look at how the abdominal tissues attach to the external and internal aspects of the pelvis and contribute to the structure referred to as the inguinal ligament.

The transverse abdominus will be dissected and the relationships with the rest of the abdominal muscles, superficial fascia and skin, shown in cross section and explore how TA serves as an attachment for the fine fibres of the peritoneum.

We will follow the tissues of the abdomen across the pelvis to see how the abdominal fascia blends into the fibres of the gluteal tissues and on to the lateral hip.

We will then reflect the gluteus and look at the tissues that surround the hip joint, considering the relationships of these to the abdominal structures already examined.

Areas to be covered

  • Skin and superficial fascia/adipose tissues of the abdomen and upper pelvis

  • External obliques and their fascia and the connections to tissues above, below and behind

  • Internal obliques, their fascial continuities and differing fibrous arrangement.

  • Transversus abdominus and the transversals fascia all the way around the trunk

  • Connections of the abdominal tissues to a central structure

  • Rectus abdominus at both ends and how it blends into the pelvis and over the interpubic disc

  • Pyramidalis (if present)Fibres of gluteus Maximus as continuities of abdominal tissues

  • Gluteus medius and the comparison of its deep fascia to gluteus maximus

  • Fibrous structures overlaying the lateral aspect of the hip joint

  • Muscular attachments of the hip joint

"To 'see' the soft tissue we as therapists think we influence is a privilege. Julian Baker makes all the right connections between the 'tissue' and considerations for therapeutic intervention. Functional Anatomy is a must for all 'hands on' therapists. It is also a must for the 'hands off' body of therapists! Seeing is believing.."
