Why the spine is not a fragile tower
Why “posture” is often the wrong starting point
Why spinal curves aren't design flaws
Why pain is rarely explained by one disc, joint or weak muscle
How spines manage load through movement, pressure and adaptation
Why stiffness may sometimes be a strategy, not just a problem
Why “neutral spine” can become a useful idea or an unhelpful obsession
How breath, ribs, pelvis and nervous system all influence spinal behaviour
What this means for therapists, movement teachers and anyone working with bodies
We use the phrase 'spinal column, like it's some kind of solid structure
The common story
We are often told that the spine is something that needs to be stacked, corrected, stabilised, braced or held in place.
Too much curve.
Not enough curve.
Weak core.
Poor posture.
Too much sitting.
Wrong alignment.
It sounds plausible because the spine looks like a column but in reality it's much more than a stack of bricks.
The spine is alive and adapting constantly. It's responsive and changes strategy depending on what the whole system is asking it to do.
Understanding how loads impact on spinal dynamics helps to steer the focus away from a single 'problem' and instead begin to understand how the system is adapting

Don't just take our word for it...
"To 'see' the soft tissue we as therapists think we influence is a privilege. Julian Baker makes all the right connections between the 'tissue' and considerations for therapeutic intervention. Functional Anatomy is a must for all 'hands on' therapists. It is also a must for the 'hands off' body of therapists! Seeing is believing.."
"Captivating, often bizarre and incredible insights into the human body like you have never seen before. Always life changing sessions, questioning the “norm” as we are taught it and bringing new dimensions to your practise.
If you attend one of Julian's classes your working brain will be changed forever - for the better and you will only want to see more!! His humour is also legendary!!"
"I have just participated in the scar tissue dissection course. This is an incredible lesson in anatomy. Julian takes you on a journey thru a human body like you've never been before. It is amazing to see how a human body is really built, how strong, how resilient. Eye-opening and educating. Thank you.
I will be back for more."
