This webinar takes a deliberate step away from the comforting fiction that pain lives neatly in damaged tissues.

Pain is not a property of structures. It’s an output of a lot of systems that are dynamic, predictive, adaptive, occasionally mischievous, but which have evolved to keep us alive, however uncomfortable.

The central idea is simple but disruptive: tissues don’t feel pain; nervous systems decide it. And they do so using far more information than nociception alone.

We’ll unpack how pain emerges from the interaction of multiple systems:

  • the nervous system (central and peripheral)

  • immune and inflammatory factors

  • endocrine and stress responses

  • past experience, learning, and expectation

  • the social and cultural context in which a person lives

This isn’t an argument against anatomy but about overly relying on it. Structure still matters—but as one voice in a noisy committee, not the chair of the board.

For therapists and movement professionals, this is a profoundly important and practical shift. Assessment changes, language changes, even treatment goals change. The question moves from simply “What’s damaged?” to “What’s driving the need for protection in this system right now?”

Pain seen this way, becomes less of a mystery and more of a conversation—one that can be influenced, educated, calmed, and often gently altered.

In the next layer of this work, we can start asking what effective intervention looks like when the target is a system, a behaviour or a thinking rather than just a structure.

That’s where things get REALLY interesting!

We can experience pain without damage and damage without pain.

Is nociception the same as pain?
