THE MONDAY WEBINAR SERIES:

Why Won't Clients Do Their Exercises?

Why won't clients do their exercises? Are they unmotivated, non-compliant, forgetful, or is something else going on?

We often assume that if people understand the importance of an exercise programme, they will do it.

The logic seems straightforward.

Someone has pain, stiffness, weakness or a movement problem.

We assess them, explain what is happening, prescribe exercises and expect improvement.

When they don't do the exercises, it's tempting to assume the problem is motivation.

But like many common explanations in healthcare, coaching and rehabilitation, this becomes misleading when we treat it as the whole truth.

In this webinar, we'll look at why people often struggle to follow exercises given, why understanding is not always enough to create action, and why "non-compliance" may tell us more about our ideas than the person.

We’ll explore:

  • The myth of motivation, willpower and patient compliance

  • Why knowing what to do is often very different from actually doing it

  • The difference between capability and behaviour

  • Why people can genuinely want to improve and still fail to follow a programme

  • How lack of familiarity previous experiences influence exercise adherence

  • Why connecting your advice, into existing priorities easily fail

  • What behavioural science can teach us about habit formation and long-term change

  • Why information alone rarely changes behaviour

  • How language and techniques used by therapists can help or hinder engagement

Do clients fail to do their exercises because they lack motivation?

The answer is: sometimes perhaps, but not in the simple way we're often told.

People often don't complete their exercise programmes. There's little controversy there.

The more interesting question is why.

Did they forget?

Did life get in the way?

Did something not fit into their daily routine?

Or was there a missing step in how we connected the client from our session space to their personal space.

If therapists believe every missed exercise session is a motivation problem, they may spend their time encouraging people to try harder.

If clients believe failing to do their exercises means they are lazy, uncommitted or lacking discipline, they may become discouraged and disengage.

This is no-one's fault, it's just a misunderstanding of what happens naturally in human behaviour. This webinar will fix that almost instantly!

What stops clients from doing what you ask them to do?

READ SOME REVIEWS

Don't just take our word for it...

"To 'see' the soft tissue we as therapists think we influence is a privilege. Julian Baker makes all the right connections between the 'tissue' and considerations for therapeutic intervention. Functional Anatomy is a must for all 'hands on' therapists. It is also a must for the 'hands off' body of therapists! Seeing is believing.."

"Captivating, often bizarre and incredible insights into the human body like you have never seen before. Always life changing sessions, questioning the “norm” as we are taught it and bringing new dimensions to your practise.

If you attend one of Julian's classes your working brain will be changed forever - for the better and you will only want to see more!! His humour is also legendary!!"

"I have just participated in the scar tissue dissection course. This is an incredible lesson in anatomy. Julian takes you on a journey thru a human body like you've never been before. It is amazing to see how a human body is really built, how strong, how resilient. Eye-opening and educating. Thank you.

I will be back for more."
