The lymphatic system is an active transport and immune system, not simply a set of passive drainage pipes. Movement, breathing and external forces can indeed influence lymph transport. BUT influencing lymph flow is not the same as “detoxifying” the body or manually flushing toxins away.
The lymphatic system has become one of the latest stars of the wellness world. Lymphatic drainage, detox treatments, facial lymph massage and techniques claiming to improve immunity or remove waste are increasingly popular.
But what does the lymphatic system actually do, and what can movement or manual therapy genuinely change?
In this webinar, anatomist and educator Julian Baker takes a practical look at the anatomy and physiology of lymph: where it comes from, how it moves, the role of lymph nodes, how fats enter the lymphatic circulation and why muscular activity and everyday movement are important parts of the system.
We’ll also explore the effects of surgery and cancer treatment, before looking at manual lymphatic drainage and other hands-on approaches.
We’ll ask the question: what does the evidence suggest we can reasonably influence, and do our explanations match what we actually know?
What lymph actually is and where it comes from
The lymphatic vessels, ducts and major lymph-node groups
How lymph is transported without a central pump like the heart
Intrinsic lymphatic pumping versus external influences on flow
The role of skeletal muscle contraction, breathing and body movement
Why immobility's a problem and what happens when normal lymph transport is reduced
Cancer, lymph nodes and what changes following lymph-node removal or damage
What lymphoedema is, why it develops and current management approaches
What the evidence tells us about manual approaches
Movement and exercise as part of lymphatic management
“Detox”, immunity and other popular lymphatic claims
What manual and movement therapists can reasonably claim — and what they probably shouldn't

What does the research tell us about pain, stiffness and the menopausal transition?
How does oestrogen influence tissue biology, and what can we reasonably conclude from those changes?
What evidence exists for hormone replacement therapy and its effects on musculoskeletal symptoms?
How can we use this understanding to make better decisions about movement, exercise, loading and treatment?

Julian has been teaching anatomy, dissection and bodywork classes for over thirty years.
Something of a heretic within the anatomical establishment, he challenges the norms of conventional anatomical thinking and creates a new paradigm in how anatomy is taught.
His humorous, gentle and patient approach encourages application over academic knowledge and seeks to dismantle what many of us take for granted.
Julian has decades worth of experience in the therapy field and has a depth of knowledge that is second to none, ensuring that any learning experience with him is unforgettable
Don't just take our word for it...
"To 'see' the soft tissue we as therapists think we influence is a privilege. Julian Baker makes all the right connections between the 'tissue' and considerations for therapeutic intervention. Functional Anatomy is a must for all 'hands on' therapists. It is also a must for the 'hands off' body of therapists! Seeing is believing.."
"Captivating, often bizarre and incredible insights into the human body like you have never seen before. Always life changing sessions, questioning the “norm” as we are taught it and bringing new dimensions to your practise.
If you attend one of Julian's classes your working brain will be changed forever - for the better and you will only want to see more!! His humour is also legendary!!"
"I have just participated in the scar tissue dissection course. This is an incredible lesson in anatomy. Julian takes you on a journey thru a human body like you've never been before. It is amazing to see how a human body is really built, how strong, how resilient. Eye-opening and educating. Thank you.
I will be back for more."
We're excited to have you on board!
