Why do so many women experience new aches, stiffness and changes in movement during menopause and how much can we actually attribute to hormones?
An evidence-informed anatomy webinar exploring oestrogen, connective tissue, muscle, tendon, pain and the implications for manual and movement therapists.
A woman in her late 40s or 50s tells you that since starting menopause, everything aches.
Her shoulders hurt, her joints feel stiff, and movements that once felt comfortable have become difficult.
It's tempting to attribute these changes to falling oestrogen and there are indeed good biological reasons to consider that possibility.
But does the presence of oestrogen receptors in connective tissue establish that declining hormones are really responsible for someone's pain?
Menopause also coincides with changes in sleep, recovery, activity, body composition and ageing so there are several important factors to consider.
Understanding the difference between a plausible explanation and a demonstrated cause is important for therapists, particularly when we're deciding how to help.
Does menopause really cause musculoskeletal pain?
What happens to fascia, collagen, muscle and tendon?
Does HRT improve pain and movement?
What should therapists actually do differently?
What does the research tell us about pain, stiffness and the menopausal transition?
How does oestrogen influence tissue biology, and what can we reasonably conclude from those changes?
What evidence exists for hormone replacement therapy and its effects on musculoskeletal symptoms?
How can we use this understanding to make better decisions about movement, exercise, loading and treatment?

His humorous, gentle and patient approach encourages application over academic knowledge and seeks to dismantle what many of us take for granted.
Julian has decades worth of experience in the therapy field and has a depth of knowledge that is second to none, ensuring that any learning experience with him is unforgettable
Don't just take our word for it...
"To 'see' the soft tissue we as therapists think we influence is a privilege. Julian Baker makes all the right connections between the 'tissue' and considerations for therapeutic intervention. Functional Anatomy is a must for all 'hands on' therapists. It is also a must for the 'hands off' body of therapists! Seeing is believing.."
"Captivating, often bizarre and incredible insights into the human body like you have never seen before. Always life changing sessions, questioning the “norm” as we are taught it and bringing new dimensions to your practise.
If you attend one of Julian's classes your working brain will be changed forever - for the better and you will only want to see more!! His humour is also legendary!!"
"I have just participated in the scar tissue dissection course. This is an incredible lesson in anatomy. Julian takes you on a journey thru a human body like you've never been before. It is amazing to see how a human body is really built, how strong, how resilient. Eye-opening and educating. Thank you.
I will be back for more."
We're excited to have you on board!
